Lovedale is a stop on one of the world's great mountain railways.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line running between Mettupalayam and Ooty via Coonoor — one of the few rack-and-pinion railways still operating in India. Its compact blue-and-cream carriages, nicknamed the “toy train,” climb through tunnels, over bridges, and past tea estates on the final stretch into the hills. Lovedale is one of the last stops before Ooty, and often the quietest platform on the line — mist over the valley, pine forest on both sides, and a short taxi ride to everything on your itinerary.
